Donated boats en route to Sister City

VB Gov – Four donated rescue boats are finally en route to Olongapo,Philippines. Thanks to SEMAC President Christopher Monzaga for arranging the shipping at a cost much lower than quotes obtained from other companies. The Virginia Beach Development Authority approved the $20,200 expenditure for the shipping at its March 15 meeting. In wake of Typhoon Odette, which caused record flooding in our sister city in 2013, Olongapo leaders indicated it needed rescue boats. Councilmember Jim Wood worked with City staff to identify surplus boats from the city’s inventory that could benefit Olongapo’s emergency response system. A Boston Whaler used by police patrol, two rigid-inflatables used by EMS, and an aluminum utility skiff used by Public Works should arrive to the Philippines end of April.
